There seems to me, a place we go within ourselves, where stimulation of any kind outside of what we are in direct dialogue with diminishes to a point where ignorance to it is effortless and orderly. The source of this dialogue is different for all of us and hard to access for most of us.
I am a Seattle based artist concerned with the balance that exists between subject matter and the materials used within a painting. Paintings can be about and exist for what the materials are a means to, (the subject matter), or they can be about the materials themselves, setting aside any subservient role and existing on their own terms. I believe there can be a balance between these two, seemingly polarized existences for paintings. I continue to explore this tension in my studio/apartment, discovering and rediscovering something each time I pick up the knife or brush.
